REAPER 101 is a series of short tutorials to help you with setting up and using REAPER. To kick off the series, here is one to keep your projects neatly organized.
By default REAPER projects do not use a media folder. All your audio files, project files, backups, and peaks are saved in one folder and its a HUGE MESS!! Here’s how to fix that.
- Open up the project settings (File>Project Settings…)
- Switch to the Media Tab.
- In the “Path to store media files” Type “Audio Files” or “Media Files” to create a folder within each new project folder to store all recorded and imported media files.
- Double check that “WAV” and “24 bit PCM” are selected as the recording format.
- Save as default project settings.
Hope this helps, stay tuned for much more in this series.

Always a good tip. This would in fact make a nice default setting.
Did you see our latest tutorial: REAPER 101: Media Files Folder http://t.co/1DsIboQp
In my Media tab, Audio Format for New Rec is set to Mp3 by default (not sure how it happened); I keep trying to change it to WAV, but it reverts back to Mp3 once I close the Project I’m in and open a new one.
Nothing in these settings will save for me. Any suggestion? Thanks
the “save as default” button will set those settings for this project and new projects, unless you’re using a template.
You can have a default project set in Preferences: Project

Unfortunately, relative paths is not working for me 🙁
Win7, Reaper 4.33
make sure there are no slashes, just “Audio Files” entered.
mb it’s little outdated, but… Would be great to have separate folders for media types (video/audio/image). Anyone knows how to make it?
Project settings now has an option to override the preference for copying files to the media folder. So with that set to NOT copy, you can make multiple folders and manage your project folder manually. Recorded files will still go to the project media folder but video files can be put in separate folders.
I have a question, but not sure if this is even the right place for it. Still, I’ve searched all over for an answer to this and have found nothing that speaks to this, or I may have just not seen it as such. When I first installed Reaper/NINJAM, I followed a tutorial by Kenny Gioia and was able to create a channel, connect to one of them, and listen to the metronome and the musicians playing. However, somewhere along the line I must have done something wrong, because now when I try to join a channel by clicking on the CONNECT button, I get an error message window popup that says, “error creating session directory,” and nothing plays anymore. Please help! Going stir crazy with the Coronavirus lockdown and would like to be able to set this up to rehearse/jam with friends.
For unsaved projects NINJAM records into the Default recording path set in Preferences: Paths
if it’s blank, or wrong username etc then you’ll get an error.
Thanks for your prompt response. I appreciate it!
Seems straight forward enough, but still doesn’t work, and I get the same error message. Let’s see if I can explain this better…
Under Preferences – Paths, I have…
Path Settings
Default path to save new projects: it’s blank
Default render path (if left empty the current project directory, if any, will be used: also blank
Default recording path, when project is unsaved and no recording path is configured: blank
a checkbox titled “Store all peak caches (.repeaks) in alternate path: unchecked
Use alternate peak cache path for the following paths (multiple paths separated by semicolons): and blank
I tried populating the new projects, and default recording paths, twice. Once with a path that existed under my C Drive (C:\Users\Bill\Documents\REAPER Media\NINJAMsessions), which is where two previous recordings were apparently saved when I HAD sound after initial install. However, this path did not prevent the error from occurring again. So, I tried removing the \NINJAMsessions folder, but it still did not work.
Next, I tried changing both these paths to one where I actually have the Reaper program installed on my N Drive (N:\Program Files (x86)\Reaper). That did not work either, unfortunately.
Oh, and when you mentioned “wrong username” I became even more confused. Which username? Where? For Reaper? Or for NINJAM? That’s another thing. Exactly how does one get to the NINJAM login, settings, etc. Though I installed it, I have yet to see a program icon that lets you open a program, so it must be accessed a completely different way.
With regard to Reaper paths, maybe I’m not typing in the correct place, or not typing the correct thing, or some other thing. In any case, I’m still dead in the water.
wrong user name like if you imported a configuration from your work computer to your home computer. Has been coming up with other users I’ve been talking to, not related to NINJAM
I just realized I gave you the wrong info. With the NINJAM console window in focus you should see in the menu bar File : Preferences…
There is a session files path to set there.
Hopefully this fixes it
You’re spot on, and that fixed it completely! I REALLY appreciate your help!!! Thank you for pulling my fat out of the fire! 😉

I don’t want Reaper to create copies of my media, but just to leave the files where they are and reference those files. I have gone to Project Settings>Media and set the dropdown menu to “Use global preference (do not copy media to project path). And yet, when I save the project it creates new files (and references them) in my project folder. Is there a step I’m missing here? Thanks.
I accidentally unselected the option to have a media file adjust to the speed of the project. How can I restore that? For example, I go into a drum folder and select a sample – it no longer adjusts to the speed of the project automatically. Thank you
I know I can do this manually each time, but is there a setting that _moves_ the imported files to the project directory instead of copying them? I thought I had set it to do that at one point, but I guess I didn’t.
thanks in advance
oh! forgot.
Also, is there a way to import multiple media items and NOT have them automatically be placed into the edit window/tracks
