Did you know REAPER includes over 250 audio effects? JS Effect Spotlight is a series of articles highlighting the often overlooked JS effects included with REAPER.

If you’ve ever wished for a step sequencer in REAPER, look no further than JS: Sequencer Megababy by jnif. This plugin is included with REAPER.

sequencer_megababyMegababy has also been modded by a user named NandyC and you can download it here. The mod adds an incredible amount of features to an already very useful plugin. Things like more patterns, different color themes, more MIDI controls. To install simply add the text file to the “Effects/MIDI” folder in REAPER’s resource folder.

So, how the heck do you use this thing? In my first attempts with it, I couldn’t get my head around it. Luckily for us, Lachrimae on the forum made this overview video a few days ago. If you find this video useful, let him know on his channel and give the video a like.

I am completely new to all things digital and have only been using Reaper for about 10 days now. I found your video to be an incredible asset to what I have already learned and you kept it simple enough that someone like me could sort of follow along and get the idea of what one could do with this tool. VERY NICE!!

I need to learn by reading, not watching videos. My first impression: this is a pattern generator for midi devices but you call it an audio effect, e.g. this is a reverb. Have problems with the swing. A swing is a delayed offbeat as far as I used it in music. It would be helpful not to use technical but musical terms…I need less options but clearer explanations.

hey nick! the js plugins are all referred to as “effects.” even if it isn’t an effect like reverb that you might expect!

Great video. I learned about extending the range (sliding the green), recording midi (instead of manually copying it), and the SWS groove tool (and extra grooves at Reaper forum). Thanks!

    Hi friends.
Just discovered Mega Baby today. Amazing, and almost what I was dreaming of. Except that, I am blind, and live in a “no mouse” environment. As some of you may know, Reaper is already accessible to the blind, but some of the plug-ins like this one Miss some accessibility points.
The parameters that are present in Reaper’s VST automation are accessible. But what I really miss is a way to remove notes after entering them. Entering them is easy, all I have to do is press record and play my midi keyboard. But how do I remove them without the mouse? It would be great if it could be done via MIDI, like for example by holding the shift key on your computer keyboard and playing the notes you want to remove…
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,

When you say the “text file” all I can see in the download are sounds in text format. The more obvious install file is not a text file?!?!?

When you say “resource folder” I can find no thing like that on my C drive in the Reaper folders.

I think I may be too stupid to use Reaper…

Hi Andy. You’re not stupid. None of us understood this the first time.
The download actually doesn’t have an extension, if you wanted to give it one then .jsfx would be best.

“resource folder” is what we call reaper’s install folder. Options menu “Show REAPER resource path in explorer/finder”
In there is where you’ll find the ‘effects’ folder with all the JSFX format plugins. put the file in here.

I followed these instructions but I still can’t seem to find it in “Add fx”

Hey P-DOT, you have to put in this path: C:\Users\name\AppData\Roaming\REAPER\Effects\midi

I’m working on a piece in 7/8. I have a sequence (128 steps) that begins several minutes in. Mega baby wants to begin the sequence at step 30 or so. It seems to be counting in cycles from beat 1 of the entire piece, so I must be at beat 128(X) + 30 or so. Can I get around this?

    Where do I find battery?

Hi. In mega baby’s original version, it is possible to toggle notes on/off from a midi keyboard. I can’t seem to be able to achieve this with its NM version. Is there a way?
    Thanks.

I was very excited at firth with that sequencer….Problem with these sequencers is – they not read out named note from reaper midi editor. Instead of display names of used midi keys for example with reasamplomatic notes are named as used drums sounds. these sequencer only display name of midi notes not names of actuall midi keys in reaper midi editor. without that feature they all not usable for me cause i want knot what i do and which sound sequencing. untill they add this feature i think theese sequencers are rather not usable for me.
