In the tutorial on album mastering setup I mention that I don’t burn CDs or create DDPs within REAPER, in favor of a better tool. In this video I show you the basics of using HOFA CD Burn & DDP.

    Comment: Hi Jon,
Thanks for your work! I was just looking at your video on the use of HOFA to author DDP masters, and I have two quick questions:
    1. When you dropped the files into the program you said it automatically created a “gap” between them. I am trying to produce a CD which moves seamlessly between tracks in the same acoustic space, and don’t want any “gaps”. Any thoughts?
    2. Sorry – I am a real beginner here! – when you have created the DDP image files, how do you write them to disc (what media) or can one send the DDP image to a replicator as it is. Its a bit scary NOT being able to test whether this has worked, btw!!

Again, thank you for sharing your work!

1 – you can set it to a gap of 0. If you’ve already set your exported files to the exact length and timing in reaper, then this is perfect.
and also you can shift (automatically creating crossfades) in the HOFA editor at the bottom.

2 – in HOFA there is a separate burn to disk function. The DDP is the master file, the burned disk will be identical but don’t give that to the duplication/replication and risk errors.

Thanks so much Jon. I am afraid I can’t seem to get rid of the gap between tracks. When you say the gap can be set to 0, how do you do that. I have searched and search and searched, but can’t seem to do it. I have manually deleted all the gaps that are put in when you load new audio files, and then under “settings” I have set the “Default Pause” and “Marker Distance” all to 0, but when I burn a CD there is still a “gap” between every track. What am I doing wrong?

How much of a gap? It should adjust to fit to CD frames but with the minimum gap/overlap possible. Set those gap preferences before importing the files.
The markers and audio items don’t line up exactly if you zoom in close. I haven’t had anyone mention gaps in the final discs.

Jon – I believe I worked it out. I initially imported the audio files with all the default settings in play. I then tried to modify the project according to the above, but the gaps were still between tracks. So, I started an entirely new project and BEFORE importing the audio made sure the Pause and marker settings were at 0. The result was that the gaps between tracks are now gone. This may be of use to others. I hope so!
