I came across an article from sound designer Charles Maynes at Designing Sound dot Org where he explains using the 5.1 surround panner in Pro Tools to route audio into 5 different fx chains that he could morph and blend between by moving the pan position. I thought this was a really interesting and new (for me) way of thinking about audio processing and wanted to find a way to do it in REAPER.

This is what I came up with using ReaSurround and routing to 4 separate tracks.

If you want to save some time and hassle setting up the routing for this, sign up for the email list to get the track template and more free bonuses.

Earlier in the week I teased that I was going to do a tutorial on this idea with this short video

I got a comment on that video to try it with cab sims. In this next video I try that out with four different cabinet impulses running in ReaVerb.

There are many creative uses for this, I hope this idea inspires some creative work for you.

awesome video. i really love that you’re using things Reaper in ways where it’s clear it’s not how it was intended. i’ve come across a few of these things myself and I’m beginning to think that is where Reaper’s true potential starts to show itself. anyways – great video, can’t wait to set this up and try it myself. it will be a wonderful tool for all sound and game audio designers.

Using modulation to make the dot move in circles is also a lot of fun.
