In the last Adam asked about using lush reverbs in a dense mix. One of my suggestions was to use sidechain compression to push the reverb out of the way and come up in the space between. In this video I’m showing an example of that same idea with a delay on a vocal in a mix.

TLDR;

  • Delay/reverb on separate track
  • ReaComp after the effect set to detect Auxiliary input
  • Send from vocal to delay track as usual
  • A second send from vocal to delay track on channel 3/4 (the auxiliary input of ReaComp)
  • Vocal feeds into the delay/reverb and is simultaneously compressed by it’s own sound. When vocal stops, the tail of delay/reverb swells up.
  • 6-8dB of gain reduction as a starting point.
  • Adjust ratio, threshold and release time for control over amount and timing of tail.
