Jon explains a simple custom action and how to assign it to run from a double-click.

The action finds the nearest item edges on left and right of the edit cursor and sets the time selection around the item or gap between items.

Custom: Select time between items
Item navigation: Move cursor left to nearest item edge
Time selection: Set start point
Item navigation: Move cursor right to nearest item edge
Time selection: Set end point

Preferences/Editing Behavior/Mouse Modifiers:
Track | Double-Click | Default Action

To extend the time selection longer over multiple items or gaps, hold shift and double-click to run a second action.

Custom: Add to time selection (nearest item edge)
View: Move edit cursor to mouse cursor (no snapping)
Item navigation: Move cursor right to nearest item edge
Time selection: Set end point

Preferences/Editing Behavior/Mouse Modifiers:
Track | Double-Click | Shift

These actions work great along with actions like “Time selection: Remove contents of time selection (moving later items)”. I’ve been using this a lot recently for video editing.

Hope these actions are helpful to you as well.

Update – June 11 2017

I was asked by a user about selecting gaps on just the selected track, here’s the action we came up with.

Custom: select time between items same track
Item navigation: Select and move to previous item
Item navigation: Move cursor to end of items
Time selection: Set start point
Item navigation: Select and move to next item
Time selection: Set end point
Item: Unselect all items
