I do a lot of ripple editing for the dialog work I do for podcasts and these videos.
I’ve recently come up with a way to save some time doing this editing, by making a custom action that trims, jumps back, and plays the edit in context. This saves me from needing to click earlier in the edited track to hear how it flows.

I use S to split, A for Custom Trim Left, and Shift-A for Custom trim and preview.

Custom Trim left action:

  • Item: Trim items left of cursor
  • Item navigation: Move cursor to start of items
  • View: go to cursor

Go to Extensions: Command Parameters and set Seconds (edit cursor) to [1.000]

Custom trim and preview action:

  • Custom: Trim left
  • Xenakios/SWS: Move left configured seconds
  • Transport: Play

      Hi Mike
What browser are you using? This is how it should look –

Thanks for this. I’ve had a custom action to move back to one second before the beginning of a time selection, and then playback skipping the selection. Then I cut and remove the time selection. I think this will be much quicker.

What about using the custom action: Auto trim/split items (remove silence), then unselect “Preserve timing of non-silent areas” ? That’s what I’ve started using lately for my podcasts, since it would take ages to edit out the pauses by hand

Interesting, I hadn’t noticed that action in the list before. With some trial and error I could probably get some use from this.
“it would take ages to edit out the pauses by hand” It’s still very worth the time to listen and make sure everything flows well. Don’t want to shortcut things too much and make the product worse.

    Hi 🙂
Small issue here : when I hit the command to “custom trim left action” it does cut and delete the part between the last split and the cursor position, but it does not move the right item close to the left one.
    Any advice ?
Thank you in advance for the answer and keep it up, it’s super helpful !

      Hi Eliott
Ripple editing mode needs to be enabled from the main toolbar.
