Area selection in REAPER is when you select items within a time selection and then apply actions affecting the selected area. In this video I share 6 custom actions I’ve been using a lot for dialog editing (podcasts and videos) plus the mouse modifier that makes area selection incredibly quick.

The Actions:

Custom: Mute Selected Area Of Items
Item: Split items at time selection
Item properties: Mute
Time selection: Remove time selection

Custom: -3dB selected envelope section
SWS/BR: Select envelope at mouse cursor
Envelope: Insert 4 envelope points at time selection
Envelopes: Move selected points down a little bit
Envelopes: Move selected points down a little bit
Envelopes: Move selected points down a little bit

Custom: +3dB selected envelope section
SWS/BR: Select envelope at mouse cursor
Envelope: Insert 4 envelope points at time selection
Envelopes: Move selected points up a little bit
Envelopes: Move selected points up a little bit
Envelopes: Move selected points up a little bit

Custom: Remove Selected Area Of Items And Unselect All Items
Item: Remove selected area of items
Item: Unselect all items
Time selection: Remove time selection

Custom: Remove Selected Area of Items (select right)
Item: Remove selected area of items
SWS: Select next item (across tracks)
Item grouping: Select all items in groups
Time selection: Remove time selection

Custom: Cut Selected Area Of Items And Unselect All Items
Item: Cut selected area of items
Item: Unselect all items
Time selection: Remove time selection

Mouse Modifier:

Preferences/Mouse Modifiers/Arrange View/Right-Drag
– default = Marquee select items and time
