A long fade out to end a song isn’t as popular today as it once was but it still comes up from time to time. Have you ever thought about the best way to do that in a DAW?

If you think you can just fade out all the items you’d be dead wrong.

The best way is to use automation on the Master track Volume. It’s the last gain stage in the project and it’s the only way to avoid your fade out fighting your dynamics processing.

For best results, fade out as the last stage in Mastering.

TLDR;
– Show Master Track in arrange view
– Show Volume envelope lane
– add envelope point for start of fade out
– add point for end of fade out and drag to -inf
– choose a curve that sounds right for your song
– Fast Start, and Slow Start/End usually sound best
