In this video we’re playing around with a technique I first saw done on a 4-track tape recorder by a member of Nine Inch Nails.

You can do this in any DAW with any synths and effects but you’ll want to have some kind of control surface to adjust track volumes for this.

It’s a really fun way to build up a song with a totally different approach than you might be used to. It’s excellent for this kind of ambient/noise music.

And of course because we’re not using tape we’re not limited by sound quality or number of tracks.

It really is a lot of fun and I hope you’ll try it if you have a control surface, or even sliders you can link to track volumes.
