I got a great response to the recent mixing template video and I wanted to follow up and answer some of the questions that came up there:

  • Track template vs project template
  • Importing files into the template
  • Accessing the parallel FX

Then we’re going to play with compression on some real drums. You’ll also hear how my template helps with the top-down mixing approach, beefing up these raw drum tracks with little effort.

For drum bus compression, two of my favorite plugins are T-Racks Bus Compressor, and Brainworx BX_Townhouse Compressor. Both are classic SSL style compressors but they both have their own special thing.

My starting point settings are roughly
4:1 ratio
3ms attack
300ms release
sidechain filter 60Hz
Threshold adjusted for 4-6dB of gain reduction

edit – the issue I was showing with the knob behavior on bx_townhouse has been fixed in an update.
