Hi Jon, just a few weeks ago I listened to The Matering Show, where Ian and you were discussing, how much bass is too much. Inspired by what you were saying about adding a subwoofer to your setup I gave it a thought – or two. I’m using monitors with 6,75″ midbass speakers. Not too bad compared to smaller speakers, but far from producing bass frequencies. As a result I never knew, what’s going on in the lower frequency spectrum. I finally ordered a rather small sub that is located right next to me on a shelf – isolated from it acoustically. After adjusting the crossover frequency and volume of it I’m so happy with it. As you said in this video: it’s not about overpowering or emphasizing the low frequencies but to add what is missing from the small speakers. Now I can finally hear the beef of a kick drum low toms, the foundation a bass guitar really adds to a track. I would say it has been one of the most significant improvements of my home recording setup. Thank you to you both for inspiring me to close that gap. Take care and thank you for your blog!

The sub on the floor centered between is where I’d put it, but regardless it’s good that you’re liking the addition of the sub and thanks for the nice comments!

ReaComp will do soft clipping too!

Set all four time constants to 0, ratio to infinity, start with knee around 6. Threshold becomes the highest level that will ever come out. If you use the automatic make up gain, then you can use the threshold to set where it clips off and the wet slider to set the actual maximum output level.

i need some help, is monitoring fx hardwired on outputs 1/2 of reaper? can i change it? my main outputs are 17/18 on the A&H zed16r, fx monitoring does not work on those channels so i cant use my calibration software, is there a way to fix it?

you know at the top of a plugin there is 2 in / 2 out ? Click that to show the routing and change to 17/18 for output.
