There’s a mixing technique called Delay Throws where you automate the send level to add echos to certain words. But there’s a preference in REAPER that might make that impossible.

Preferences: Editing Behavior: Automation
“When adding volume/pan envelopes, apply trim and reset trim: [Always; In Trim/Read; Never]

If this is set to Never, and your track sends default to -inf dB, It’s impossible to automate from silence up to a usable level. You can only start at unity and automate down.

If you plan to use delay throws in your mixes, that preference needs to be set to ‘Always’.

Remember, this preference affects behavior of Track Volume and Pan envelopes and Send Volume and Pan envelopes.
