The “MIR” series concept

Sitting in on a mixing session is not something every home studio musician has the opportunity to do. I aimed to give the experience of sitting with me through a mix, sharing tips as I go and all for less cost than an hour of studio time.

This new video training product gives you an over the shoulder look at one of my mixing sessions. Over the course of a few hours I take you through the process of preparing to mix, creating a rough mix, processing, automation and finally mastering a very dynamic song.

After I made Mixing In REAPER Volume 1, I analyzed my habits and workflow and did a lot of rethinking and optimizing. This series shows many of the ways REAPER can aid in mixing flow. I also approached the mix in a different way from last time to demonstrate some other options that are available.

There are a lot of REAPER-specific tips and tricks demonstrated, but the overall mixing concepts can be applied to any DAW and genre of music.

There’s something I need to stress about this video series. It is not a step by step, how-to-mix tutorial for beginners. Because that’s not how I approach mixing… if you want the experience of having a mixing engineer explain his thought process to you as he’s mixing, this might be something you’d like.

Before you get into this course you should already have a good understanding of using EQ, single and multiband compressors, delay, reverb and other effect processors.

Here’s an excerpt from the course so you can see the exact format of the series.

Hi. I love your work and have learnt a load from you already through your videos, through youtube and through the reaper user group facebook page. I have a question about this course before I buy it. Are volumes 1 and 2 stand alone or designed to be one follows the other. Should I just buy the second volume or will I be substantially better off with both. As I say love your work but I still live on an amateur musicians budget.

Thanks for these videos. The master section was cool, but for me, who is new to the game of mastering, it would have been good to hear elaboration about why you were deciding to go to each step along the journey…IOW, more conceptual frame-working. Maybe you’re saving that for a future course on mastering?

So, Clipped Max and Klangheim’s VU meter plugin are recommended? 😉

This course uses only Reaper Plugins or any third party one that I need to buy to follow. Thanks

it is a mix of stock plugins and 3rd party fx. No 3rd party fx is essential but demos should be available for all if you want to try them too
